Promoting Fairness, Celebrating Difference
GenderShift Mission: To help create a fairer world in which every persons gender, gender identity and gender expression is accepted and respected. GenderShift is a social enterprise located in Hull, in East Yorkshire and providing training and consultancy services primarily to Yorkshire and the Humber region. We will also be providing on line services though this and other web sites. We will achieve our mission by responding to the requirements of the Gender Equality Duty and the Gender Agenda published by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) before it was merged into the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC)
The Gender Equality Duty
The Equalities Act 2006 introduced an important change in sex discrimination in the UK, probably the most significant change in 30 years. The Gender Equality Duty (GED) came into force in April 2007 and imposes on all public bodies a duty to take reasonable action to prevent discrimination and harassment and promote equal opportunities for men and women. What that means is that if there is a claim of sex discrimination against a public sector organisation, they must now demonstrate that they have taken reason steps to prevent it happening. It is no longer enough to wait for a case to be brought against them and defend it. Public organisations must not be proactive rather than reactive. But its not just an issue for the public sector. Any private or third sector organisations (community and voluntary organisations, charities, and social enterprises) are also required to comply with the GED if they deliver service on behalf of a public authority, provide services to a public authority or are funded by public money (including lottery funding). This means that most other organisations need to take account of this duty. One significant element of the Gender Equality Duty of particular importance to GenderShift is that it applies specifically to people who have undergone, are undergoing or are planning to undergo gender reassignment. This is a very specific definition essentially covering only people diagnosed as gender dysphoric, but in practice it means that organisations will need take action to prevent discrimination against all trans people. And this is where GenderShift can really help. We deliver a range of transgender awareness workshops, seminars, film nights, and publication to enable organisations to meet their responsibilities under the GED.
