Biz Week Hull

BizWeek Hull - June 5th to 11th 2010

GenderShift is once again taking a very active role during BizWeek Hull this year flying the flag for Social Enterprises and bringing a much needed message about diversity and empowerment to the business sector.

On April 8th 2010 the Equality Act 2010 finally received royal assent. This event was missed by many because it was totally overshadowed by the calling of a gender election on the same day. The Act brings together 40 years of equality and diversity legislation into a single act while at the same time introducing a number of important improvements to legislation and removing some anomalies in the treatment of different strands of diversity.

The Act will come into effect in stages from October 2010.

Of course since then we have had an historic change in government. On the one hand the Conservative's have a pretty poor record when it comes to removing inequalities, especially with regard to gay and trans issues. On the other hand the LibDem's have consistently supported improving equality and diversity rights, especially for Gay and trans people. It will be interesting to see how the parties work together in the implementation of this important legislation.

At the GenderShift BizWeek Events we will be taking a lighter look at equality and helping you to explore the business case for diversity.

Hidden in Plain Sight

Saturday 5th June 2010 - 8.00pm - Hull Truck Theatre – Studio Theatre

Was Shakespeare in love - with a Transsexual?

Why do people love DRAG but hate homosexuality?

For thousands of years” cross dressing” has been a primary source of theatrical entertainment, yet the people who cross dress, both men and women, have been constantly persecuted, often with extreme violence. Gender diversity boasts a highly visible but seldom discussed history of people both loved and hated at the same time.

Join Rikki Arundel for a fascinating historical and personal journey across the gender divide and discover the real truth about gender crossing and homosexuality in this controversial and entertaining performance.

Tickets: £8 (£6 Concessions)
